Music, a powerful evocative of memories

How many times have you wanted to get on one of those time machines to return to a specific moment in your life? We have two pieces of news to give you. The bad news is that you will not be able to do it because they have not invented it yet. The good news is that there is an alternative, and that is that you can travel thanks to music.
You may not be aware of the power that music has on our brain, but think of that moment when while you were driving that song sounded that made you return to the first summer in Ibiza, or to your sister’s wedding, or to the surprise birthday they made you your friends for over twenty years.
Our day to day does not have a soundtrack as if we were in a movie, but it does have background melodies that accompany us. It turns out that if they sound while something happens, in one way or another, they mark our life, every time you listen to it you will travel back in time as if you had climbed on that machine that you have only seen in movies.
But why does this happen?
“Our day-to-day lives lack a spontaneous soundtrack, but many of our memories are mental movies that begin to play in our heads when we listen to a familiar piece of music, which acts as its soundtrack,” explains Petr Janata, professor of psychology at the Center for the Mind and Brain at the University of California at Davis.
The power that music exercises in the human mind is indescribable. Just by listening to a few notes of our favorite song we are able to turn a tear into a smile, to transport ourselves to the past and even to release tension.
Various studies have shown that music, like smells, are powerful reminiscences. Janata explains how in a region of our brain, related to the storage and retrieval of memories, neurons work as a connection center between familiar melodies, memory and emotion.
With all this, and knowing a little more how music works in our brain, we can give our business the direction it needs.
