What is music curation? Much more than a playlist: the sonic identity of a brand
Today, anyone can create a playlist in a matter of minutes. Digital platforms allow us to choose a genre, mood or activity and instantly access thousands of songs that, on the surface, seem to fit together. But when it comes to a hotel, restaurant or any space where the experience is part of a brand’s identity, having a playlist does not mean having a music strategy.
Music curation begins long before asking ourselves which songs we like or which ones sound best at a particular moment. It involves listening, selecting and making decisions with a clear intention behind them.
What is music curation?
Music curation is the process of selecting, organising and evolving music according to a specific identity, space, audience and context. A music curator does not simply search for songs within a particular genre. They analyse what each track conveys and how it works as part of the whole to build a programme with a clear purpose.
Two songs can belong to the same genre and yet evoke completely different feelings. That is why, at Ibiza Songs, our team of curators selects music track by track. Each song is carefully listened to and analysed, taking into account its intensity, rhythm, character, vocal presence, level of familiarity and, above all, its ability to represent the identity defined for each project.
Algorithms have transformed the way we discover music and are highly effective at identifying connections between songs, genres and listening habits. But selecting music for a brand presents a different challenge. We are not simply looking for songs that sound similar. We are looking for songs that make sense within a specific experience.
A playlist selects songs. Music curation creates an experience.
When we design music for a brand, selection is only one part of the process. First, we need to understand what we are trying to create: how the brand defines itself, the values it wants to convey, who its audience is, the personality of the space and what we want to happen within it.
That is why every project at Ibiza Songs begins with an in-depth study of the brand and its different spaces. Only then does the music come into play. Because a song can be extraordinary and still be completely wrong for a particular brand.
Human curation vs. algorithmic selection
A curator interprets nuances: when a song becomes too prominent, when a vocal changes the atmosphere, when a familiar track provides just the right level of recognition, or when, despite seemingly meeting all the criteria, a song simply does not convey what we are looking for. Technology is a fundamental part of our service: it allows us to distribute, update and monitor music programming centrally. But the creative decisions remain in the hands of our curators.
Music programming that evolves
Music curation does not end once the programming starts playing. A strong music selection requires depth, variety and continuous updates to avoid repetition and remain effective over time.
Brands evolve, new artists and trends emerge, seasons change, and so do the needs of each space. That is why we continuously monitor and update our music programming, introducing new music while preserving the defined identity.
Because a brand does not simply need songs that sound good together. It needs judgement and expertise. And that is the difference between creating a playlist and designing a truly meaningful music experience.
